OUR MISSION AND VISION

The Portneuf Valley Trails Alliance (PVTA) advocates for and maintains sustainable, accessible trails for the Portneuf Valley community.

Our vision is connected, well-maintained, and sustainable trails that allow all community members to enjoy safe, accessible, and diverse outdoor experiences. Through advocacy, generational stewardship, and community events, PVTA strives to make the Portneuf Valley a premier destination for human-powered recreation, fostering a culture of conservation, health, and adventure.

Our Story

The Portneuf Valley Trails Alliance (PVTA) traces its roots back to a spirited local initiative known as PedalFest, a grassroots effort that centered around an annual mountain biking event in Pocatello. Originally founded to raise funds in support of local mountain bike trails, PedalFest quickly became a beloved tradition for outdoor enthusiasts across the region. Over several years, the event successfully generated critical awareness and financial backing for trail development and maintenance.

As the original PedalFest organizing group phased out its regular meetings, the event was entrusted to another nonprofit to continue the legacy. Still, the community’s commitment to trail advocacy endured. In early 2025, a renewed group of community-minded individuals came together with a shared vision: to create a nonprofit that would champion trail access, stewardship, and recreation across the broader Portneuf Valley.

The newly formed Portneuf Valley Trails Alliance (PVTA) expanded the mission well beyond mountain biking to include all forms of human-powered trail use—including hiking, trail running, and equestrian activities—while maintaining collaboration with local motorized trail groups. This broadened scope reflects PVTA’s inclusive commitment to the entire outdoor trail community.

PVTA is focused on increasing access, safety, and quality within the regional trail system, with the long-term goal of making the Portneuf Valley a recognized destination for outdoor recreation.

In addition to advocacy and trail development, PVTA is proud to host community events such as group rides, hikes, and trail runs, bringing people together to experience and celebrate the outdoors. The organization also leads volunteer trail maintenance days, creating hands-on opportunities for individuals, families, and even corporate groups to give back to the trails they love. These events foster stewardship, build community, and directly improve trail sustainability.

Through this dynamic blend of programming, volunteerism, and advocacy, PVTA works to ensure the trails of the Portneuf Valley remain a cherished, accessible resource for current and future generations.

Founded by a group of passionate bikers and hikers, Portneuf Valley Trail Alliance began as a small community initiative to maintain and create local trails in 2025.

MEET OUR BOARD MEMBERS

Tyler Scheibenflug
President

Tyler has lived in Pocatello for 8 years, and after living in many other places across the country with established trail organizations, he saw a vision for what trails in the valley could be. He has a passion for our local trails where he loves to mountain bike, ski, run, bikepack, or just walk the dog. Tyler works as a land surveyor, and before that, a wildland firefighter. He hopes to transfer the knowledge and experience from these careers to maintaining sustainable and accessible trails.

Carri Wullner
Vice President

Carri joined PVTA to help Pocatello to be considered more of a mountain bike destination. Her passion for mountain biking goes back many years and has included racing and now enjoys coaching others. Carri was a sales rep in the Outdoor Industry and that is where her knowledge and respect for the outdoors grew. She has been coming to Pocatello since 2016 to ride trails and ended up moving here in 2022. Pocatello has so many great things to offer, and our trails and outdoor recreation is what makes it so special!

Cary Rhodes
Secretary

Cary is passionate about outdoor recreation and has spent her career trying to increase
opportunities for those new to the outdoors as well as expand access to the outdoors for
everyone. She enjoys the trails on bike, foot, and ski and is immensely thankful for the
incredible amount of trails that surround Pocatello.

Anne Marie Bary

Treasurer

Anne Marie has been a local Pocatello resident for 30 years. She enjoys hiking the Portneuf Valley trail systems and has been a trail work volunteer since 2023. When she is not on the trails, she works in market research and loves to spend time with her family, friends, and dog.

Trish Kerner

Trish loves being outdoors—sometimes it’s researching soils, water, and plants, other times it’s skiing, biking, or hiking. Since moving to Idaho in 2018, she’s worked with Idaho State University as well as Idaho-based non-profits and conservation coalitions. She joined the PVTA in 2025 to give back to the trails and community she loves. She’s an advocate for balancing access for all trail users with the long-term health of Pocatello’s natural landscapes. If you see her on the trails, she’s probably smiling… unless it’s uphill.

Landon Gallentine

Landon moved from the Black Hills of South Dakota to Pocatello in 2022. He has worked for the BLM and Forest Service in various positions over the course of ten years and maintains a strong sense of stewardship for our natural spaces. Landon enjoys spending time on trails backpacking, trail running and mountain biking while staying busy in the winter skiing and snowboarding.

Colin McDonald

Colin moved to Pocatello in 2023 and quickly connected with the local trail community. With a lifelong love of biking, hiking, and skiing, he joined the Trails Alliance to help keep outdoor spaces accessible and enjoyable for everyone. He’s passionate about giving back and making a positive impact on the trails he now calls home.

Mike Sullivan

I have been in Pocatello since 1980 and have seen the trail system evolve and expand to a state where management is needed to sustain high quality trails. As a runner / biker / skier and trail builder my time on these trails have provided a feel for how important this resource is to both the local community and regional users. It is time to give back and help develop a solid volunteer force that can evolve to affordably take care of the trail system. I am passionate about quality trails and the experience that users have while using them.

Kate Buschhorn

Katie is a lifelong Idahoan who moved to Pocatello for grad school and quickly came to love the outdoor spaces the Portneuf Valley has to offer. She is passionate about trail improvement and accessibility of Pocatello trails. This aligns with her work as a physical therapist and wanting all her patients to enjoy the outdoors, no matter their functional level. Katie enjoys skiing, downhill and Nordic, mountain biking, hiking, and camping in her free time.

Peter Pruett

Peter is passionate about the environment and has spent a career working towards educating, conserving and helping others find inspiration outside. As an avid trail user, he feels it is important to support our trail systems to ensure that the Portneuf Valley will always have opportunities to access and enjoy our outdoors.

Nina Ratliff

Nina is an avid mountain biker who moved to Pocatello in 2024 for one reason—the incredible trail network. Passionate about exploring new terrain, she spends her days discovering new routes, chasing views, and capturing the adventure along the way on her YouTube channel. Being an Accountant by trade, the outdoors are her place to recharge. She is grateful for the large cycling community in Pocatello and is excited about inviting others into the joy of two-wheeled exploration. When the snow settles in, Nina swaps her MTB for a fatbike, embracing winter riding with the same enthusiasm. She also enjoys snowboarding, making the mountains her playground year-round. She joined PVTA to give back to the community and help maintain and expand our large trail network.
